Bristol Rovers chairman Nick Higgs has hailed the impact of recently-appointed manager Mark McGhee at the start of what he believes are exciting times for the club.
The Pirates can almost guarantee League Two safety if they can secure a victory over Southend United at the Memorial Stadium tomorrow – just three months on from looking like potential relegation candidates following a difficult start to the campaign.
Former manager Paul Buckle paid the price for those disappointments by losing his job just over six months into his tenure.
McGhee was tasked with taking charge a month later and has instigated a turnaround in fortunes that has raised hopes amongst supporters that Rovers could become serious promotion candidates next season.
Addressing supporters through his weekly 'Chairman's Report' briefing on the club's official website, Higgs said: "At the turn of the year we were fearful going into every game, but now we are looking at every match as one we could and should be winning.
"I think it goes to show how far we have come in the last few months that we have come away disappointed from two away draws (at Torquay United and at Plymouth) recently, feeling we should have taken all three points.
"It is good to see both players and supporters going into games full of confidence, and we now need to keep this unbeaten run going for as long as possible and finish as high up the table as we can. I think it all bodes well for an exciting season next year."
Higgs presided over a summer of change following Buckle's arrival and Rovers' relegation to League Two at the end of last season, which saw the arrival of virtually a whole new squad of players.
The chairman, however, has pledged to back McGhee with any changes he wishes to make before the start of the next campaign to offer his manager the best chance of building a promotion-winning squad.
"Mark has already said that he has started planning things out for the new season," said Higgs.
